Each year, scholars gather at Brigham Young University to give presentations on the life and mission of Jesus Christ. A new book published in partnership with BYU Religious Studies Center and Deseret Book draws from the 2018 and 2019 Easter Conferences.
“The Tragedy and the Triumph” is edited by Charles Swift, an associate professor of ancient scripture at BYU.
“Because of Jesus Christ and his infinite and eternal Atonement, all humankind who came to this earth are given the gift of resurrection and immortality,” wrote Swift in the foreword. “This is truly the most powerful story of triumph over tragedy.”
The book is comprised of six chapters written by four men and two women. Elder Bruce C. Hafen, an emeritus General Authority Seventy, writes about the “love and delight” that come from teaching our children about Christ.
Other contributors include former Young Women general president Sister Susan W. Tanner, historian Richard Bushman, and Thomas Wayment, a professor of classics at BYU who recently published the joint BYU Religious Studies Center and Deseret Book publication, “The New Testament: A Translation for Latter-day Saints.”
Each chapter contains a variety of personal stories, scriptural commentary, and beautiful color artwork on glossy pages. Various aspects of the Savior’s life, including his Atonement and Resurrection, receive special attention with an emphasis on personal application.
“The story (of the Savior) is far more than just personal,” wrote Swift. “It is the ultimate story of triumph over tragedy, for it affects all of us for time and for eternity.”
